  Disciples II는 Heroes of Might and Magic III와 종종 비견되는 작품입니다. 서로 흡사하지만 상당히 다른 시스템으로 인해 새로운 맛이 있던 작품이지요.(그에 반해 Disciples III 이후부터는 다소 미묘해진 감이 없지 않습니다.) 나름 명작이고 아직도 많은 사람들이 기억하고 있는 작품입니다.

  Disciples II는 오리지널인 Disciples II: Dark Prophecy이후 Disciples II: Servants of the Dark와 Disciples II: Guardians of the Light, Disciples II: Rise of the Elves를 내놓았습니다. 그 중 Disciples II: Dark Prophecy와 Disciples II: Servants of the Dark, Disciples II: Guardians of the Light는 Disciples II: Gallean's Return으로 합쳐졌으며, 이후 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves를 더해 Disciples II Gold가 완성되었습니다. Disciples II Gold는 현재 Steam에서 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves으로 각각 구매 가능하며, GOG.com에서 Disciples 2 Gold로 판매 중입니다.

  Gold 버전이라고 해도 막상 설치하고 나면 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves으로 나뉘며 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves에 Disciples II: Dark Prophecy (Collector's Edition)에 있던 5개의 보너스 Quests(A Return To Simpler Times, Greenskins, Orc Champions, The Seals, Vertigo)가 추가될 뿐입니다. Steam의 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves는 단품이지만, 제품 섬네일에서 알 수 있듯이 Disciples II Gold의 개별제품이기 때문에 누락된 것은 없습니다.

  사실 누락됬는지 안되었는지 알도리가 없었긴 합니다만, 어느쪽이 더 나은지 한참을 비교하다가 베컴의 명언(냐안 듈돠)을 통해 풀리지 않는 숙제를 풀고 고통에서 해방될 수 있었습니다. 그리고 부담 없이 어느쪽이 더 나은지에 대해서 여유롭게 생각할 수 있게 되었습니다. 이번 포스트는 그에 대한 보고서라고 할 수 있습니다.

GOG.com의 Disciples 2 Gold

  GOG.com의 Disciples 2 Gold를 설치하게 되면 Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return 2.02 버전과 Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves 3.0 버전이 설치됩니다. Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return은 최신버전이고, Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves는 최신버전이 아닌 셈입니다.(Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves의 최신 버전은 3.01버전입니다.)

  게임 외 보너스 컨텐츠로는 위와 같이 다양하게 준비되어 있습니다만, 다받아보았으나 별로 대단한 것은 없었습니다. 걔중 그래도 설정원화가 그려진 Artworks 정도가 마음에 들었다고 할 수 있겠습니다.

  게임으로 들어가 보자면 한가자 큰 문제점을 발견하게 됩니다. 처음에는 그저 각각 따로 판매하고 있는 Steam판에 과연 Gold버전의 보너스 Quest가 있는지 여부만 살펴보기 위한 것이었습니다만, 도리어 Steam판이 아니라 GOG.com의 Gold 버전에서 Quest의 다중 누락을 확인 할 수 있었습니다. Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return에서 기본 Quest인 The Impire가 없었고, Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves에 다량의 Custom Quest가 보이지 않았습니다.

  하나 정도 차이나는 Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return의 경우는 이해하고 넘어가더라도, Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves에서의 십여개가 넘는 Custom Quest의 누락은 정말 큰 충격이었습니다. 어떻게 이런 일이 벌어진 것일까요?

  그 해답은 GOG.com의 Disciples 커뮤니티에서 확인할 수 있었습니다. 바로 GOG.com의 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves가 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves Gold가 아니었던 것입니다. 해당 Custom Quest들은 위에서 설명하고 있는 14 new skirmish maps to test gamer's skills에 해당하는 것들인데 Gold버전에 와서 추가된 것들입니다. Gold버전이 아닌 GOG.com의 Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves에는 없는 것이 당연한 것이었죠. 다시 말하자면 Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves가 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves Gold로 업그레이드 되었는데 GOG.com에서 판매되고 있는 Disciples 2 Gold에는 변경되지 않았던 것입니다.

  상당히 큰 문제였습니다만, 다행히도 그 해결책 또한 GOG.com의 Disciples 커뮤니티에서 얻을 수 있었습니다. Strategy First에서 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves Gold를 내놓으면서 그 이전 버전을 사용하는 사람들을 위한 무료 Upgrade 패치를 내놓았다는 것입니다. 물론 Strategy First 공홈은 지금 썩 상태가 좋지 않아 기존 제공하던 패치들 링크마저 소실한 만큼 맛이갔기 때문에 아래의 링크에서 받으셔야 합니다.

  Gold Upgrade 패치를 하고 나면 Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves의 버전도 자연스럽게 최신버전인 3.01로 변경됩니다.


기존에 누락되었던 Custom Quest들도 모두 추가된 것을 확인할 수 있습니다.

  하지만 그럼에도 Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return의 기본 Quest인 The impire의 행방은 알수가 없습니다. 분명 버전은 GOG.com의 Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy and Gallean's Return가 높은데 정작 기본 Quest는 하나 부족하다는 것은 이해할 수 없는 것이었습니다.(앞에서 이해하고 넘어갈 수 있다고 했지만, 반드시 이해하고 넘어가야 하는건 아니죠.)

  사실 The Impire는 과거 Disciples II Gold 패키지 CD에 들어있던 보너스 Quest입니다. Gold 버전을 위해 추가된 정식 Quest이기 때문에 Steam판에는 들어있는 것인데, 오래된 버전인 GOG.com의 버전에는 없었던 것이죠. Quest 이외의 보너스 컨텐츠로 보이는 *.ldr 파일들이 있는데 그건 시작시 선택할 수 있는 추가 Leader들입니다. 진영별로 3개씩 총 12개가 있습니다.


  스팀판에 뭐라도 있었으면 좋겠지만, placeholder라는 이름의 0 KB 파일 외엔 없으니 거기서 추출할 순 없고, 결국 위대한 구글의 힘을 빌어 의심되는 모든 파일을 일단 마구잡이로 긁어 모은 다음 검사해 보았습니다. 다행히 그 중 하나라도 얻어걸린게 있어 여기에 소개합니다.

  이로써 GOG.com의 Disciples 2 Gold는 가장 최신버전의 완벽한 상태가 되었습니다. 처음에야 엄청난 충격을 가져다 준 GOG.com의 Gold버전 이었습니다만, 이렇게 완성시켜 놓고 보니 구매하길 잘했다는 생각이 듭니다.

Steam의 Disciples II: Gallean's Return, Disciples II: Rise of the Elves

  이번에는 Steam판 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves입니다.

  게임 외적으로 GOG.com의 Disciples 2 Gold와 가장 큰 차이는 GOG.com에서 제공하는 보너스 컨텐츠들입니다. 그중 in-game sound track의 경우 그야말로 게임내에 사용된 음원들일 뿐입니다.

  메뉴얼은 아래 링크에서 볼 수 있습니다. Strategy First의 사이트에 연결된 링크인데 공식 홈페이지 디자인이 개편되면서 기존 자료실이 변경되어 지금은 구글링을 통해서 밖에 만날 수 없는 자료입니다.

  결론적으로 게임외적인 컨텐츠는 사실상 크게 고려할 대상이 아니라고 할 수 있습니다. 이러다보니 Gold 버전 보너스 컨텐츠를 가지고 GOG.com 커뮤니티 포럼에서 불만글이 올라온 적도 있었지요.

  게임 내적으로 들어가자면 Steam판의 경우 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves가 모두 v2.01과 v3.0으로 최신 버전이 아닙니다. 아니 좀 더 자세히 들여다 보면 더 우스운 상황입니다.
  일단 Disciples II: Gallean's Return는 게임 실행파일은(Discipl2.exe) 2.01버전이고 Disciples II - Configuration Editor(ConfigEditor.exe)는 2.02 버전이며 Disciples II Sceneario Editor(ScenEdit.exe)는 2.0 버전입니다.

  Disciples II: Rise of the Elves역시 게임 실행파일은(Discipl2.exe) 3.0버전이고 Disciples II - Configuration Editor(ConfigEditor.exe)는 3.01 버전이며 Disciples II Sceneario Editor(ScenEdit.exe)는 3.0 버전입니다.

  여기서 원래 그런 것이 아니냐, GOG.com의 것도 그런게 아니냐고 생각할 수도 있지만 아닙니다. Steam판이 이상한 겁니다.


  그래도 일단 버전이 구버전이니 지금은 사라진 Disciples II 공식 사이트로 들어가 패치를 받아 실행해 보았습니다. 물론 안됩니다. Disciples II: Rise of the Elves에서 게임 실행파일은(Discipl2.exe) 3.0버전인데도 이러는걸 보면 Steam판은 일반판과는 전혀 다른 버전이라고 생각이 됩니다.

  안되는건 어쩔수 없다치고 다음으로 넘어가자면 Disciples II Sceneario Editor 실행파일인 ScenEdit.exe가 실행되지 않습니다.(의, 의사양반 이게 무슨 소리요?!) Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves 모두 Disciples II Sceneario Editor가 실행되지 않습니다. placeholder라는 이름의 0 KB 파일만 남겨놓은 스팀판이기에 기존 Quest나 Saga의 편집은 꿈도 못꾸는데 새로이 플레이어가 작성하는 것 또한 불가능하게 되었습니다. 자주 쓰는 기능은 아니지만 웬지 모르게 아쉬운 부분입니다.

GOG!!

  부실해보였던 GOG.com의 Disciples 2 Gold와 완벽해 보였던 Steam의 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves였습니다만, 자세히 살펴보니 기능적 결함이 있는 Steam판과 DRM free의 위엄돋는 GOG.com판이었습니다. 고전게임은 GOG.com이라더니 역시 명불허전이라는 것을 깨닫게 해주었습니다. 결국 Steam판의 Disciples II: Gallean's Return과 Disciples II: Rise of the Elves는 라간지용으로 전락하고 말았네요. Disciples II를 정말 사랑하신다면 GOG.com 버전으로 구매하시길 당부하며 이만 마칩니다.

ps. 가격만 보고 결정한다면 Grean Man Gaming에서 DRM free로 90% off 판매 중인 상품(http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/kr/en/pc/games/strategy/disciples-ii-gold-edition/)이 있습니다. 해당 상품은 구매해 본 적이 없어 뭐라 말씀드릴 것이 없네요.

Bonus Quests

  Steam판에 Disciples II Sceneario Editor가 작동하지 않아 슬프지만 그래도 잘 찾아보면 추가적으로 할 수 있는 Custom Quest들이 제법 됩니다.

  아래는 지금은 사라진 공식 사이트에 올라왔던 Quest(Scenarios)들입니다. 정확히 말하자면 지금은 사라진 사이트의 저장된 페이지입니다. 다행히도 자료 자체는 Strategy First 홈페이지에 잔존해 있기 때문에 마지막에 소개하고 있는& The Way of Freedom Scenario 를 제외하곤 모두 받을 수 있습니다. 구글링 하다보면 이것들을 묶어놓은 파일이 돌고있기도 한데, 기왕이면 원본자료를 받는게 좋겠다는 생각에 그쪽으로 소개합니다.
